BUSINESS LEADERS GET AIRPORT EXPANSION INSIGHT Business leaders from across north Essex got the lowdown on high-flying expansion plans for Stansted Airport – and heard a myth finally quashed. The guest speaker at the Business Café meeting on October 2 was Ashley Riley, the new Head of Public Affairs for BAA at London Stansted Airport. Mr Riley briefed an audience of more than 40 business people at The Barn Brasserie at Great Tey on the multi-billion pound plans for a second runway and terminal at Stansted. Mr Riley said that the new development would not only mean the airport could handle millions more air passengers but would bring billions of pounds of business opportunities to Essex. He said: “The plans have been controversial in some quarters but we are taking only half the area for the development than originally anticipated. Stansted Airport will continue to make a considerable national and local economic contribution.” Mr Riley, in answering questions from the audience, was light heartedly quizzed about a much-repeated claim that the second runway had already been laid ready to be unveiled when permission is finally granted. Mr Riley said: “We often hear that a second runway was laid some years ago and is just waiting to be uncovered. Our plans would see the careful brick-by-brick removal and rebuilding of some buildings that are hundreds of years old – so unless a runway was laid in the 1800s, people can be reassured there is not one there waiting!” The second runway plans are to be subject of an inquiry, which is likely to start next year. If permission were granted the new part of the airport would be in operation by 2016-17. Business Café member Kevin Nolan of stockbrokers Edward Jones said: “We have speakers to keep us abreast of business matters and Ashley Riley was both entertaining and informative. We have much more information now of what the proposed new Stansted Airport developments would mean.” Issued on behalf of The Business Café by Words Worth PR For further information please call Graham Lowing on 01268 756261 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
