Top 8 Reasons to Embrace Cloud Accounting

Thursday, 16 June 2016 00:00

If you have recently travelled into London you could not fail to see the advertising by Xero on both the underground stations and on the trains themselves. If you watch Sky on TV you will probably have noticed adverts by QuickBooks. What are they all about and why are they potentially so important to you?

Peter Disney and his colleague David Rudd from Wood & Disney Chartered Accountants will be explaining what both Xero and QuickBooks are doing to revolutionise book keeping for the small business community and the advantages to you of adopting this new technology sooner rather than later. You will also be able to see a demonstration of a mobile phone App linked to one of these systems.

All of Wood & Disney’s accounts staff are both Certified Xero Advisors and QuickBooks Online Certified Pro Advisors. David Rudd has also achieved the QuickBooks Online Advanced Certification.

University Of Essex, Essex Business School – Professor Nigel Pye

Thursday, 05 May 2016 00:00

The days of academics living in metaphorical ivory towers are long gone (well mostly!). Universities need to remain relevant, current and useful to society and are always on the look out for opportunities to get involved with the local (and wider) community. Universities, broadly speaking, have two principle functions, to generate and to disseminate knowledge. So what does this mean for the University of Essex and the businesses in Essex and South Suffolk? For a start, the University contributes nearly half a billion pounds to the local economy. But what can the University of Essex do for you? Well, apart from providing you with excellent graduate and postgraduate students, how about getting you ahead of the competition by conducting leading edge research on your behalf. How about getting you a new, highly trained employee and pay 60% of their salary for a year? Or how about developing you and your team through executive education?

Essex University is consistently in the UK top 20 for research excellence and is seeking to help local business benefit from all that generated knowledge. Our speaker this week, Professor Nigel Pye, Professor of Business and Management & MBA Director of Essex Business School, will give you an overview of what the University of Essex can do for you.

What makes a great LinkedIn profile and how to optimise your profile for search

Thursday, 07 April 2016 00:00

When it comes to business there is one social media platform that stands head and shoulders above the rest and that's LinkedIn.  Only last month LinkedIn, which is the world's largest online professional network with over 277 million members worldwide, announced that it had passed 15 million members in the UK, a 50 percent increase from 10 million members in September 2012.

So how do you make sure you can stand out from the crowd to maximise your opportunities of connecting with the people you want to, whether that is seeking potential customers, suppliers, business partners or employees?  Or maybe you are just looking for a fresh start?

The answer is your LinkedIn profile.  It is here that you present your face to the world and it is here that your journey starts to achieve your connection goals.  But what makes a good profile and how do you optimise it?

To answer these questions and more, we are delighted to welcome Mick Holloway, from 24-7 Business Networking Ltd to our next breakfast meeting on 7th April, when he will run through the 'do's' and 'don'ts' of creating a great profile.  Mick is a true social media 'guru', with a wealth of experience in helping businesses and individuals achieve their social media goals.

So what ever stage you're at with LinkedIn, whether it's novice, getting by, or seasoned professional, come along on Thursday and pick up some great tips.

Business Cafe AGM (open to non members)

Thursday, 24 March 2016 00:00

Our annual AGM.

Following the formalities of our (brief) AGM we are going to discuss the latest Business Cafe book club book, 'Triggers: Sparking Positive Change and Making It Last' by Marshall Goldsmith.  Chris Crace has volunteered to lead the discussion.

According to the book summary on Amazon, 'Triggers' confronts head-on the challenges of behaviour and change, looking at the external factors (or 'triggers') - both negative and positive - that affect our behaviours, our awareness of when we need to change, our willingness (or otherwise) to do so and our ability to see the change through.

The goal is for these sessions to be inclusive so that even if someone has not read the selected book they can participate in the broader discussion about the theme of the book.  So, if you are planning to visit the Business Cafe this week and the topic intrigues you then grab a copy of the book otherwise feel free to come along anyway and share your thoughts on the topic.

The pains of software that makes you truly more profitable

Thursday, 25 February 2016 00:00

For most businesses software is a means to an end, but nevertheless critical for running efficiently to save money, capturing information to make the best decisions, identifying and communicating sales opportunities, ensuring consistent service to customers, making it easier for your customers to reach you and much more.

Despite all this many businesses are stuck in a middle-ground, needing such systems to cater for their uniqueness but lacking the in-house expertise to objectively deliver something effective and unsure how to choose from so many options.

Dominic Tyler-Lovett from Conclusys will be discussing how it's possible to get software that saves you money, makes you more money - for less money!  We'd now like to discuss how this has been working and ask for your valuable feedback on the company's overall presentation.
