Quentin Colborn of QC People Management Ltd gave a presentation to the group on the HR issues facing smaller businesses. Among the topics he covered were the emotional aspects of recruiting someone for the first time and potentially having to give up emotional 'space' within the business, some of the practical issues involved such as the impact on life if working from home and some of the employment law issues that even small businesses face. One of the comments afterwards was 'this confirmed some of my worst fears about employing people' - not the intended outcome but it did show that members appreciated the seriousness of taking new people on into their businesses.
