As a natural progression from our last meeting, where we explored the notion of why we do what we do, as opposed to identifying the how and what we do. This session will look at how through the application of graphic design, we can convert these 'feelings' into a powerful brand identity that communicates to your current and future customers how and why.  

With twenty years industry and over ten years' lecturing experience, Esther Feltham will explore the key themes of strategy that lead to the visualisation of an organisation's beliefs and values. The session aims to demonstrate how, when an organisation recognises the value of a strong visual personality and invests in a brand story that they become the market leaders.

An organisation that invests in its visual appearance shows itself to be an organisation that cares.

Through the use of visual examples we will examine the successes and pitfalls of global (and a couple of local) visual identities.

 

Start with Why!

WHAT: Every single company on the planet knows what they do.

HOW: Many can give an explanation as to how they are different or better, by illustrating a USP or value proposition.

WHY: However very few people can clearly articulate why they do what they do – what is their purpose, cause or belief?

When most companies and people think, act or communicate they do so from the outside
in, from WHAT to WHY.

But Simon Sinek, a world renowned author, motivational speaker and marketing consultant, thinks that this the wrong way round and we should start from the WHY not the WHAT.

We would have loved to have him along to explain this in more depth but unfortunately the Business Café coffers don’t stretch to an all paid return transatlantic flight, hotel stay and speaker fees.

So we’re doing the next best thing. At this week’s meeting we are going to have a discussion between the group on the points raised and whether we agree with his hypotheses or not.

So if you’d like to have an insight into this fascinating subject then come along on Thursday and join the discussion.

The digital revolution that has occurred over the last 40 years has impacted on every one of us. These advances in technology have lightened the load in unimaginable ways and made our lives easier in so many different areas. But it’s not all good news. These same technologies have added to the pace of life and helped create levels of stress that would have been unheard of to previous generations. It impacts us on a number of levels and can lead to disrupted sleep, lowered energy, poor health and reduced executive functioning of the brain (poor memory recall, impaired decision making and stifled creativity) Our brains just don’t like it! This has led to an increase of stress related “illness” symptoms from neck and back ache to anxiety. Do you suffer from any of these symptoms?
  • Find that things take longer to do than expected?
  • Feel more awake at 2am than 2pm?
  • Wake up feeling as tired as when you went to sleep?
  • Working hard 100% until you go on holiday/take a break and then you go down with a bug
If you do, don’t worry - help is at hand! At this weeks session Paula Ruane from Ruane Bioenergetics will not only be telling us about the ways in which technology can have an adverse affect on our minds and bodies but also, more importantly, what we can do about it. Prevention is better than cure and she will talk to us about Resilience Training, the simplest, quickest and best way to relieve these symptoms by helping to reduce the underlying causes before they take hold. This will include a list of practical tips to help each and every one of us to manage the day to day stresses and strains of modern life.

So come along on Thursday and reduce your stress levels – the breakfast will help as well!

 

Facilities Management and Health & Safety 'Hot Seat'

In this week’s session we will be exploring the wonderful world of facilities management and health & safety. But before you yawn and decide that another hour in bed would be a much better option, just think on this. Your office is YOUR responsibility. Have you considered your general policy on health and safety at work? Have you carried out a risk assessment recently? Have you looked at who is responsible for specific actions? Are your staff aware and trained? Do you have all the required documentation and more importantly is it being used?

Even if you feel you’ve got all the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed, wouldn’t it be worth listening to the experts and making sure? Or maybe you have a few nagging doubts but weren’t sure who to ask?

Well this session will cover all this and more. We’re putting Grahame Clark from Hornet Solutions and Simon Huggett from Progress FM (not the Nigerian radio station, the other one!) in the ‘Hot Seat’ so that you can ask all these questions and more. And with over 50 years in the health & safety and facilities management arena between them, they will be able to answer all your questions and allay any concerns you may have.

So make sure you put 6th April in your diary now, otherwise when the unthinkable actually happens you’ll wish you had!

 

Business Cafe AGM (open To Non Members)

Our annual AGM.

Following the formalities of our (brief) AGM, Anna Trudgian, the Service User Director of Open Road will be joining us this week to tell us what they do as a charity. Open Road's mission is to empower individuals, families and communities in their journey of recovery from the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol and other addictions. Open Road is a leading provider of drug and alcohol services in the East of England, celebrating over 25 years of delivering high quality services to enable individuals and families to recover from the harmful impact of drugs and alcohol.

Through their treatment systems, they have ventured into exciting new business areas with criminal justice work, Young People and Appropriate Adult services, developed through accredited training programmes and forging strong strategic partnerships.

The needs of the people who use their services are becoming more complex for a multitude of reasons. Therefore, Open Roads services must meet these increasing demands while ensuring that they maximise their resources through innovation and capability.

 

Veteran Members Session

We have a number of members who have been stalwarts at the Business Cafe for many years. Our newer members get a opportunity to tell us about their businesses not long after they join but we also return to our existing members from time to time to either discover their stories for the first time (for the newer members), or revisit their stories if you were around when they initially joined the Business Cafe.

This week we will be giving two of these grizzled veterans, namely Neil Beech from Building Link Ltd and Steve Sleigh from Mail Boxes Etc., the chance to give us a greater insight into their businesses and a bit of background about themselves.

Come along next Thursday and hear a couple of 'How I got to where I am now' stories. You never know what you might learn!

 

Insights from The Bank of England

A welcome annual return visit from Alex Golledge from the Bank of England talking about the many financial changes that have occurred since the presentation last year and the future outlook.

For those who have not heard Alex before, he runs through each sector of business and industry in the region giving frighteningly accurate and up-to-date reports on recent activity and trends.

With so many game changing events happening in 2016, this will be a real insight into the knock-on effects that are being forecast for the coming year.

This is always a popular presentation so make sure you've got it noted in your 2017 diary.

 

 

'Show & Tell'

This week we will be holding one of our 'Show & Tell' sessions, where we have an interactive session with the attendees of the breakfast meeting.
During previous 'Show and Tell' sessions we have always come away with fresh ideas and exposure to different topics of interest to those present.

In this session we ask our members and visitors to bring along details of anything that they think may be of interest to the other attendees. This might be a tool or gadget that they've found very useful, a website or blog that they find themselves regularly returning to, or maybe a piece of software or an app that they've found indispensable.

So put your thinking caps on and come armed with details of one or two items that will inform, surprise or delight us!
