This week we welcome Marc Winter, Associate Director with Reeman Dansie. Established in the heart of Colchester in 1881, Reeman Dansie has become one of the most highly regarded auctioneers in the UK today. They have considerable expertise and detailed knowledge of antiques, fine art, royal memorabilia, classic cars, and collectables and are able to support the whole probate process from valuations right the way through to house clearance and the sale of items. Located on the outskirts of Colchester at Severalls Business Park, they hold auctions on a fortnightly basis.

Marc will be providing us with an insight into Auctioneering, the changes that have occurred over the last 20 years and the impact that technology has had on their industry over this period.

He will also talk about some of the interesting items they’ve sold and provide an opportunity to look into the valuation process.

"60 Second Challenge!"

You’ve probably heard the term ‘elevator pitch’. You may even have created one yourself.  But have you ever had it critiqued?  Well now’s your opportunity!  During this session we will offer you the opportunity to give your ‘elevator pitch’ (with a maximum time of 60 seconds) and then draw from the reaction and expertise in the group to give you valuable feedback – what people liked and any suggestions for what would make it even better.

In case you’re wondering, an elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that you use to spark interest in what your organisation does. You can also use them to create interest in a project, idea, or product – or in yourself.  They should be interesting, memorable, and succinct. They also need to explain what makes you – or your organisation, product, or idea – unique.

If you want to create one for this session then start your pitch by describing what your organisation does. Focus on the problems that you solve and how you help people. If you can, add information or a statistic that shows the value in what you do.  Ask yourself this question as you start writing: what do you want your audience to remember most about you?

Keep in mind that your pitch should excite you first; after all, if you don't get excited about what you're saying, neither will your audience. Your pitch should bring a smile to your face and quicken your heartbeat. People may not remember everything that you say, but they will likely remember your enthusiasm!

So come along on the 8th February and even if you don’t want to take up the challenge yourself, you’ll get the opportunity to hear other people’s pitches and go away with a whole raft of new ideas to presenting yourself and your company in the future.


Clout Media - Video Creation

Luke Magnay will be visiting us from Clout Media, based in Witham, to share his story about why and how Clout came about as well as some great video creation ideas that you can apply to your business.

In addition to sharing some presenting to camera techniques using just a smartphone he’ll be bringing his mobile “green screen” studio and performing a live demonstration of how quickly a simple introduction video can be produced working with a member of the audience. He strives to make his presentations highly interactive and energetic so be ready for that!

Her presentation will cover her journey from successful business women to charity donor and now the UK Director of Love Support Unite and manager of Love Specs which are connecting people around the world to change lives in Malawi.

Cyber Security

‘Cyber Security’ sounds like a clandestine section of the CIA but it is in fact a topic that affects every one of us that holds data on our customers, employees and other stakeholders.

Not only do we need to protect our data from a purely commercial point of view but also to stay within the data protection laws, particularly with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulations that will come into force in May next year.

It is therefore quite timely that we will be hearing from Alasdair Hodgkins and Phil Britten from Sarala Computers on the things that we can and need to do to protect our systems and the data they contain.

In particular they will be sharing with us:

  • A high level overview of the General Data Protection Regulations and the possible implications
  • The benefits that Cyber Essentials can offer businesses, to ensure that their IT infrastructure is secure.
