Business Cafe AGM (open to non members) plus Pioneer Sailing Trust

Thursday, 22 March 2018 00:00

Following the formalities of our (brief) AGM, we will be hearing from Felicity Lees, Sail Training Co-ordinator with the Pioneer Sailing Trust and finding out more about their charitable activities. Originally built in 1864, the 70ft Essex smack Pioneer fell into decay after a life spent dredging oysters in the North Sea. An audacious restoration project by the Pioneer Sailing Trust recovered the wreck in 1998 and restored her.

Felicity will be speaking about the inspiration and motivation behind Pioneer Sailing Trust and how it all started. She will briefly go through the history of the restoration of Pioneer and how that formed the charity which now works with young people. It takes them sailing on Pioneer as well as providing boat building apprenticeships. The framework of these apprenticeships centres around building rowing gigs and she will explain how this has linked into the local communities.

The Trust also run corporate days on Pioneer as a fundraiser to help young people in the area go sailing.

So make a note in your diary to come along and hear more about the Trust’s activities and their exciting plans for the future.

"60 Second Challenge!"

Thursday, 08 February 2018 00:00

You’ve probably heard the term ‘elevator pitch’. You may even have created one yourself.  But have you ever had it critiqued?  Well now’s your opportunity!  During this session we will offer you the opportunity to give your ‘elevator pitch’ (with a maximum time of 60 seconds) and then draw from the reaction and expertise in the group to give you valuable feedback – what people liked and any suggestions for what would make it even better.

In case you’re wondering, an elevator pitch is a brief, persuasive speech that you use to spark interest in what your organisation does. You can also use them to create interest in a project, idea, or product – or in yourself.  They should be interesting, memorable, and succinct. They also need to explain what makes you – or your organisation, product, or idea – unique.

If you want to create one for this session then start your pitch by describing what your organisation does. Focus on the problems that you solve and how you help people. If you can, add information or a statistic that shows the value in what you do.  Ask yourself this question as you start writing: what do you want your audience to remember most about you?

Keep in mind that your pitch should excite you first; after all, if you don't get excited about what you're saying, neither will your audience. Your pitch should bring a smile to your face and quicken your heartbeat. People may not remember everything that you say, but they will likely remember your enthusiasm!

So come along on the 8th February and even if you don’t want to take up the challenge yourself, you’ll get the opportunity to hear other people’s pitches and go away with a whole raft of new ideas to presenting yourself and your company in the future.
