Bob Holmes - SPS

Board Mentor to SME's, Pension Fund Trustee and Non-Executive Director.

Bob works with owner-managed business, providing them with a range of advisory services that include:

  • Strategic and business planning
  • Regular business review meetings
  • Providing a part-time finance director service
  • Management of banking relationships
  • Signposting specialist help from his network of business associates

Bob is a chartered accountant and spent the first ten years of his career with Price Waterhouse, before joining the ferry industry, where he rose to become Finance Director of Stena Line (UK) Ltd between 1991 and 1997. He moved to the rail industry, and gained experience as Finance Director of a public company with Prism Rail PLC. During his 12 years' experience as Finance Director, Bob was at the heart of the strategic development of these businesses. As a board member, he participated with board colleagues in managing issues faced by multi-million pound companies. Since 2003, he has applied these skills in helping owner-managed businesses across a range of industries.

His experience as a non-executive Director comprised appointments to the Dover Harbour Board between 2005 and 2013, and to the Board of Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust between 2006 and 2015, where he was Acting Chair for the last 6 months of his term. His appointment to the Dover Harbour Board led to him becoming Chairman of their Board of Pension Trustees in 2006, a position that he continues to hold. This defined benefit pension scheme, which has assets of £180 million, received the accolade of Best Pension Scheme with assets of less than £1 billion in the 2015 Portfolio Institutional Awards, and was shortlisted in 3 other award ceremonies. Bob is also a pension trustee of a small DB/DC hybrid scheme run for employees of an SME.
