How to Become a Member of the Business Cafe

Who can join?

The Business Café welcomes applications for membership from people who are in business. You may be trading by yourself, with other people, or be employed in a larger organisation.

The MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM can be downloaded by clicking here.

What does it cost?

There is a one-off joining fee of £50. The monthly membership fee is £36 which covers the costs of breakfasts at the fortnightly meetings and other member benefits noted below. The Club is not registered for VAT.

What is the commitment?

The Club does not operate a minimum attendance policy, although members are expected to attend when they can and there is no rebate on the monthly fee if you miss a meeting. Members may nominate a substitute to attend in their place if they are unable to make a meeting, although normally this substitute must be a business colleague of the member. Other rights and obligations of membership are set out in the Club's constitution.

Are there any other benefits of being a member?

The Club holds a number of social events for members each year, which may include a summer barbeque for members and partners, and a Christmas event for members only. The cost of these events is covered by the monthly membership charge.

The Club also takes a marquee for a day during the Colchester Cricket week in July/August to provide an opportunity for members to invite guests for a day of corporate hospitality at a subsidised cost.

How do I apply?

To apply to join you need to complete the application form, which can be downloaded by clicking here.

How is my application assessed?

Your application is first reviewed by the Executive Committee, several of whom will have met you as a visitor already. The Committee consider whether your application might give rise to a significant conflict with any existing member. The Club's policy is to be inclusive by accommodating more than one business within a similar area wherever possible. The members concerned must agree and the Committee must be satisfied that there is a clear differentiation between their activities when the members concerned talk about their businesses.

If the Committee approves an application, it is circulated to all members for their comments, which the Committee consider before a final decision is made. The application cannot be accepted if at least 5 members or 25% of the membership (whichever is the lesser) oppose it.
